Internet and Phone Connectivity at Amaroo
In previous years our only possible connectivity solutions were to:
- Rent a communications tower for the week
This option has become prohibitively expensive for the services it provides.
- Making use of the new NBN wireless (National Broadband Network)
This had a number of limitations, especially speed.
Thus both of these could no longer provide the necessary solutions we need for reliable high speed internet and phone connectivity.
Earlier this year a decision was reached to completely rebuild the onsite network infrastructure to provide a reliable backbone for internet and phone connectivity.
A new fibre company was engaged to run a (very!) high speed data connection from Brisbane to an upgraded fibre backbone onsite.
A second company has been engaged to upgrade and reconfigure the onsite network so it can provide a secure, managed payment gateway and other enhanced, centralised functionality.
The fibre connection has already been connected and the reconfiguring of the network to be ready for the upcoming event is nearly complete.
Connecting via WiFi
There will be WiFi access points at as many locations as possible for phone calls and internet connections. We are currently working on having WiFi Hotspots in the following areas:
The Jacaranda Restaurant and campgrounds
The Sandy Creek campgrounds
There will be no public connection in the Amphitheatre.
The Payment Gateway
There will be a payment gateway for Phone/Internet connection via WiFi costing approximately A$ 30.00 for the week or A$5.00 per day.
Phone connections will take place via mobile apps such as Skype, WhatsApp or Signal or on mobile phones which support “WiFi Calling” technology.
Your mobile phone provider must also support this option for your phone, especially when it is abroad. Please check carefully if you wish to use this option.
Check both that your phone model has this capability and that your service provider allows this functionality if you are aboroad.
Skype has functionality that is useful, especially if you wish to be called from your home country:
Step 1. Get a Skype Account
Step 2. Purchase a Skype out number for your local area.
Step 3. Setup the skype app on your phone
Step 4. Divert your phones to the Skype Number
Step 5 . If you want to make calls to phones through skype you need to buy skype credits
A simple and widely used mobile app for texting and calling.
Similar to WhatsApp, but encrypted for extra security.
The older model of local mobile connections via 4G over local Telcos (Telstra, Optus etc) will not be available as they are both expensive and unreliable in our bush location.
The local exchange does not have the capacity to provide the necessary bandwidth to support a large number of simultaneous users using 4G connectivity.
